JBL Headphones Keep Turning Off [Here is WHY!]

Sharing is caring!

JBL headphones are famous for their great build and sound quality. They come with cutting-edge features that you can expect in any high-end headphones.

Although the JBL headphones are very reliable, they do run into problems from time to time. One of the problems is headphones turning off on their own.

If you are wondering why my JBL headphones keep turning off, this troubleshooting guide will run you through a step-by-step process to identify and rectify the problem.

JBL Headphones Keep Turning Off – Reasons

JBL headphones don’t just randomly turn on or off on their own. If you are experiencing such a thing, there must be an underlying reason.

Here are the four possible reasons why your JBL headphones keep turning off

Drained battery

One of the common reasons why headphones from JBL keep turning off is due to the drained battery.

Although most over-ear JBL headphones last for up to 20 hours on a single charge, they can die sooner if the battery has aged for a long time of use.

Faulty charger or cable

If your charger or cable is faulty or worn off, they might not be able to charge your JBL battery fully.

If the charging cable cannot charge the headphones properly, the battery charge will end after a while, and the headphones will die.

Disrupted Bluetooth connectivity

Pairing issues and disturbed Bluetooth connectivity are pretty common with wireless headphones, which can be the case with your JBL headphones.

There can be several reasons your JBL headphones might experience Bluetooth pairing issues, such as signal loss, signal interference, or incompatibility between headphones and Bluetooth.

You might face frequent connectivity drop when using your headphones for any of these reasons.

Software glitch

If nothing is wrong with the battery or Bluetooth connectivity of your JBL headphones, then the problem is most likely caused by a software glitch or malfunction.

Software of any electronic device is prone to glitches and bugs. From time to time, they will run into an unstable state.

Some glitches get fixed with a simple restart, while others might need a hard reset or a firmware update.

JBL Headphones Keep Turning Off – Troubleshoot

Bluetooth headphones are great because they help you get rid of annoying wires. But they are not free from occasional malfunction.

From pairing issues to Bluetooth disconnectivity, they can malfunction in a number of ways.

You can try the below troubleshooting methods to get your headphones running smoothly again.

Reset your JBL headphones

Resetting any electronic device will remove any temporary bugs or glitches and will boot the system fresh.

To reset your JBL headphones, follow the following steps:

  • Turn off your JBL headphones and then turn them on by using the power button
  • Once the headphones get powered on, press the volume up & volume down buttons together for 10 seconds.
  • Release the buttons when you hear a sound, which means your headphones reset.
  • After the headphones restart, you will have to pair them again with your phone.

The reset process varies slightly from model to model.

If the above method doesn’t work for your specific model, you can go to this JBL website page, select your model, and see the model-specific reset instructions.

Hopefully, this quick fix will resolve the issue for you. However, if the problem persists, the malfunction is probably caused by a more severe issue.

Just below, we have listed all the reasons why your JBL headphones keep turning off.

Change The Charging Cable

If you already tried factory resetting your JBL headphones, but it didn’t work, then you need to check if your charging cable is charging the headphones correctly.

First, you need to check the battery percentage of your headphones.

You can connect your headphones to your phone and check the battery widget to know the battery percentage.

See the below video on how to do it.

Once you find out the battery percentage, note it somewhere, and then connect your charger and charge the headphones for some time (Like 30 minutes).

Once the headphones get charged for 30 minutes, recheck the battery percentage. If the battery percentage hasn’t increased much, your current charger is not charging the headphones properly.

Change your old charger cable with a new one compatible with JBL headphones.

Select the latest Bluetooth profile version

This method is only applicable to Android users. Apple automatically updates the Bluetooth profile to the latest version as soon as it is available.

Different Bluetooth versions are often installed on the device and headphones, which causes incompatibility.

If this is the case with you, you need to update your device’s Bluetooth version to avoid compatibility and pairing issues.

You first need to check if your phone still has any of the older versions of Bluetooth. For that, you need to follow the steps given below:

  • Go to Settings> About Phone> Software Information
  • Tap on the Build Number multiple times to enable “Developer Options”
  • Go back to settings, and you will find “Developer Options” just below “About Phone”
  • Open “Developer Options”
  • Find the “Bluetooth AVRCP Version” and tap on it

Select the latest Bluetooth AVRCP (Audio / Video Remote Control Profile) version from the list. AVRCP versions have improvements over the previous version and are always backward compatible.

Update Your Headphones Firmware

If updating your device’s Bluetooth version doesn’t work for you, then you need to opt for updating your Headphone’s firmware to resolve any software issues.

JBL often comes up with firmware updates for their products, including headphones.

If the firmware of your headphones is not updated to the latest version, then that might be why your headphones keep turning off.

To update your JBL headphones firmware, you need to follow these simple steps:

  • Download the “My JBL Headphones” app on your phone (Available for both Android & iOS)
  • Launch the JBL headphones app
  • You will find a list of all JBL headphones on the app screen
  • Tap and select your JBL headphones
  • If a firmware update is available for your headphones, you will see an orange circle with a down-pointing arrow on the right top of your headphone image
update firmware for jbl headphones via app
  • Tap the orange circle with a down-pointing arrow and then tap the install button to install the update.
  • Don’t close the application while the firmware is updating
  • Once the update is finished, go to the screen where your headphone details are displayed
  • Check out if the orange circle icon is still there
  • If not, then your headphone firmware is up to date

Change The Battery

If you find out that your charger cable is charging your headphones properly, but the battery is draining fast, then the problem is with the battery.

Batteries are disposal components and often age with time.

If you have been using your JBL headphones heavily for a long time, chances are that your battery cycles are up, and you need to replace it.

You can buy a new JBL battery from Amazon (link).

Before buying, make sure it is compatible with your specific model of JBL headphones. The compatible devices are listed in the product description.

Once you get the battery, replacing it is pretty simple. Follow these steps to replace the battery.

  • Take out the cushion from the left earpiece.
  • Remove the screws from the housing.
  • Once you remove all the screws, take out the plastic cover lid.
  • Make sure you don’t cause any damage to the wiring
  • Remove the battery by pulling off the connector
  • Install the new battery and plug in the connector
  • Finished!

If you are unsure, you can do it yourself: take your headphones to your nearest repair shop, and they can change the new battery with the old one in no time.

  1. I love these JBL’s until they start glitching – they will cause the audio to either speed up to where it’s so fast you can’t comprehend or stop for a period of time but the audio is still playing (but you can’t hear) and with audiobooks you miss stuff! Very frustrating because the iphone is very near me with no other electronics nearby (to cause potential interference). What to do?
