The first survivor showed up in a February tab in Austin: a 700-word client draft, done in 30 seconds, and 35 minutes of my own editing after it.
I billed that job the same week. By then I had 30 AI tools charged to one card.
Over 12 months I ran them on real drafts, PDFs and image briefs, working as a freelance writer and part-time fiction editor. Twenty-five got canceled. Five stayed, at $50 a month.
Almost none of the 25 were bad tools. What decided it was the edit minutes each one left me, and that number is never on the pricing page.
A tool stays only if it owns one recurring job and hands back more minutes than it adds.
Below: each survivor's job, price, catch and real time cost, then a rule you can run on your own subscription list today.

1. ChatGPT Plus Is the Everyday Drafting Utility

A token is a small chunk of text a chatbot counts as it reads and writes. The context window is how many tokens one session can hold at once.
ChatGPT Free holds about 27,000 tokens, roughly 12 pages, with limited uploads. Answers still invent sources, so I check every fact, quote and link.

Act as a freelance writer's draft assistant. I'm writing a 700-word explainer on how small businesses screen job applicants. Give me a first draft with an intro, three sections and a closing, roughly 700 words, plain American English, neutral tone. Leave out statistics and quotes unless I paste a source, and mark any place where you'd need one with [SOURCE NEEDED].
I paste it into ChatGPT Plus, which runs $20 a month. The draft lands in about 30 seconds. By hand it takes me 90 minutes.
Review and edits run 35 minutes, so each draft saves about 55 hand-minutes. That gap is why the upload limits stopped mattering and I paid.
💡 Tip: Keep one saved chat per client. Pasting the same tone notes each time wastes the 30 seconds you saved.

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE
Don't pay for two generalists
ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are both $20 a month. Before you add a third, check whether the new tool does a job the first two cannot. Most of my 25 deletions were duplicates.
2. Claude Pro Wins Long Editing, Not Fast Answers

Sometimes, but not reliably. Free Claude now includes Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 4.5, and the top model stays behind the paywall.
Every proposed change can flatten my voice or invent a fix, so each one gets accepted or rejected by hand.
A fast draft is only half the writing job. A 1,200-word voice pass on a finished essay is a different task, and the tool that drafts quickly is not the tool that keeps your sentences sounding like you.
I do not hand over legal or medical documents with real names in them. Use a placeholder copy instead.
Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. The edit takes about 45 seconds of Claude time, but my accept-or-reject pass took 25 minutes.
By hand the same pass runs about 70 minutes, so the saved hand-time is roughly 45 minutes. It earned its spot on manuscript and essay work.
3. Gemini Free Plan Covers Research and Reading

Read the attached 20-page PDF and summarize it for a freelancer deciding whether to quote on this project. Give me: the client's main goal, every deadline or figure stated, the three biggest gaps or risks, and a list of questions I should ask before bidding. Quote exact lines for any figure. Flag anything the document does not say.
That is the reading job before any draft exists: reports, briefs and long PDFs a paid drafting or editing plan cannot source for you. Paste it into Gemini's upload area.
Step 1: Upload the PDF and paste the prompt. You should see: a structured summary in about 2 minutes, against roughly 55 minutes of reading by hand.
Step 2: Check each quoted figure and every omission. That pass took me 15 minutes and caught one dropped deadline, so about 40 hand-minutes were removed.
The free tier includes limited Pro access, Deep Research and image generation. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month to double limits, and AI Pro is $19.99, but I stayed free and it survived that way.
💡 Tip: Ask for page numbers with every figure. It makes the 15-minute check mechanical instead of a hunt.
Worth Paying, or Free First
Worth the $20
- You draft or edit for clients most weeks
- Free context limits keep breaking long files
- The tool has a saved home in your daily routine
- Review time is well under the by-hand time
Run It Free
- You open it once a month or less
- It duplicates a tool you already pay for
- You only need short answers or summaries
- You have not checked its privacy settings yet
4. Midjourney Stays for Concept Images, Not Privacy

Ten moodboard images: 120 minutes by hand, one minute of Midjourney, 20 minutes of picking and cropping. Text tools stop at the edge of a client brief that asks for pictures.
When one did last spring, none of my research or drafting software could put a visual direction on the table.
Midjourney is paid-only, and that matters before style does. Images are public unless you create in stealth mode, which only comes on paid plans.
So no logo work, no unreleased product shots. I ask clients to confirm nothing confidential goes in, and I treat every gallery as a shop window.
For moodboards and early concept directions, the range is the reason it survived. CNET calls it the most creative AI image generator, and my board of ten options looked like ten different ideas, not one idea in ten shades.
The gap inside the board told me which direction to pitch.
The catch sits in the output. Two of my ten came back with six fingers on the seated figure, and one had a caption on the wall spelling nonsense.
I open each image at full size and check hands, lettering and brand colors before anything reaches a client.
Ten minutes saved per board would not cover $10. About 100 hand-minutes removed on a job that pays does. It earns its place on range, not discretion, so keep it only if you bill for visual exploration and never put anything private in the box.
💡 Tip: Write "no text, no logos" into every Midjourney prompt. You will still crop stray letters out later.
What the First Year Actually Looks Like
5. Keeping a Character's Face the Same Across Images

The tedious part is the second image. A character's face shifts, a product's label curves wrong, and you redraw all four by hand to match. Four consistent character or product images took me 100 minutes by hand.
Nano Banana Pro gave me a matching set in about 1 minute. I spent 18 minutes retouching and comparing. CNET ranks it best overall and strong on character consistency. It survived because four matching images is the job I bill for.
The catch is limits and details. The free tier's limits change, upgrades start at $20 a month, and every image still needs a human check for hands, text and brand details. Keep it free until a real brief outgrows it.
Say It Plainly
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need all five tools?
No. Start with ChatGPT Plus alone, then add Claude Pro only when long-form editing is weekly work. Gemini and Nano Banana Pro run on free plans, and Midjourney can wait until image work is client-facing and paid.
Is the $50 a month total exact?
That is my base stack as of October 2026: ChatGPT Plus at $20, Claude Pro at $20, Midjourney at $10, Gemini free and Nano Banana Pro free. Claude Pro drops to $17 a month billed yearly, and Google AI Plus at $4.99 is the first add-on if Gemini limits bite.
Do I have to know how to code?
None of the five needs code. You type, upload files and accept or reject changes. The skill that matters is a quick review habit: checking facts, figures, links and hands before anything reaches a client.
Can I paste client files into these tools?
Only with care. On free and personal plans, chats may be used to improve the company's models unless you switch that off. Never paste passwords, medical records or financial details, and check each tool's activity setting before uploading anything confidential.
What is the fastest way to cut my own stack?
Cancel anything you have not opened in 14 days. Go through your billing page, list every AI charge for the month, and sort them into jobs that repeat weekly, monthly and rarely. Rarely loses.
Cancel What You Haven't Opened in 14 Days
open your billing page and cancel anything you have not opened in 14 days. That cleared the bulk of my 25 without a single hard decision.
Need one paid generalist? Start with ChatGPT Plus. Keep Claude Pro only if long-form editing is weekly work. Run Gemini and Nano Banana Pro free until their limits actually bite. Add Midjourney only when image exploration is paid work.
The February card carried 30 line items. It now carries five, at $50 a month at base. The subscriptions were never the real cost. The review minutes were, and these five are the ones that give them back.
