Do you want to be a part of the latest reel trend on Instagram but don’t want the reel video to appear on your feed and remain there forever?
It is possible to post reels on your Instagram story without them appearing on the main feed. However, they will still appear on the dedicated reel feed on your profile.
Confused? Don’t worry, in this guide I will explain how to post reels on Instagram story without posting to your feed.
Posting Reel On Instagram Story
If this is your first time trying to post a reel on your Instagram story, and you don’t want it to appear on your Instagram feed, you can do this using some simple steps that I will explain later.
But for now, you need to know that you cannot post a reel on your Instagram story and expect it not to appear on your feed. It’s because there is a separate section on Instagram where all your posted reels appear.
Whenever you post a reel on your Instagram story, it will automatically appear in that reel section. However, you can choose whether you want your reel to appear in the main feed or not.
Here is what you need to do for this:
Step #1: Select the “+” icon
To post a reel on your Instagram story, tap your “Profile” icon at the bottom and select the “+” icon at the top to choose whether you want to post a reel or a story.
Choose “Reel” from the menu appearing on the screen.
Step #2: Record a Reel
Tap the “White circle” to record a video for your reel. Once the video is recorded, select “Next.”
Step #3: Add Music
On the next tab, tap the “Music” icon at the top.
Select “Music” from the options appearing on the screen.
Using the search bar at the top, select the song you want, move the bar to choose the part of the song you wish to add to your reel and hit “Done.”
Step #4: Post the Reel
You can customize your reel by using all the icons at the top. Once you have edited the video, tap “Next.”
Tap the toggle for “Also share to Feed” to disable it. Your reel will not appear on your feed now.
Select “Share to Reels” to add the reel to your reel feed.
Step #5: Add Reel to Your Story
Wait for a few seconds till the reel finally appears on your reel feed. Tap the “Reels” icon adjacent to your main grid icon.
Tap to select the reel you have just posted. Select the “plane-like” icon at the right side of the screen and choose “Add reel to your story.”
Make any changes to your story, and tap the “arrow” at the bottom once you are done.
You have successfully posted a reel on your Instagram story, which will not be part of your Instagram feed.
Adding Reel As a Video to Your Instagram Story
If you don’t want the reel to appear on your feed, be it the reel feed, you can add it as a simple video to your Instagram story.
There are generally two methods to post reel videos on Instagram stories. The first one allows you to post reels on the Instagram story that are already saved in your Phone Gallery.
As for the second method, you can record a video right away and post it on your Instagram story.
Here is an in-depth look at both these methods for you.
Method #1: Posting Videos on Instagram Story from Gallery
If you are wondering how to post videos on the Instagram story directly from your phone gallery, this 5-step method will make it all hassle-free for you.
Here is what you need to do for this:
Step #1: Go to “Your Story”
For the first step, you are required to navigate to the Instagram app on your phone and tap the “Your Story” icon at the top left corner of the screen.
You can find the “Your Story” icon on the Homepage, for which you have to select the “Home” icon at the bottom.
Step #2: Select a Video from your Phone Gallery
Once you are on the “Your Story” tab, you will see a “Plus” icon on the bottom left corner of the screen. Tap it to select a video from your phone gallery.
You can either scroll through your entire library to find the video you want to post as a reel or tap the “Arrow” icon on the screen and choose the “Videos” folder from the drop-down menu for easier access.
Find and tap the video to select it.
Step #3: Add Stickers, GIFs, or Change Fonts
To make your story interactive, you can add different GIFs, stickers, and texts to it. For this, select the “Smile” icon on the top side of the screen. Choose any sticker you like, or tap the “Aa” icon to add text.
You can even go for the “Scribble” icon adjacent to “Aa” to scribble anything you want to your story/reel.
Step #4: Add Music
Once you have added all the stickers, GIFs, or texts you want, you can scroll down to add music to your reel.
Select the “Music” icon, search for the song of your choice, and tap to choose it. Move the bar to select the part of the song you wish to add to your story.
Tap the music icon to choose how it should appear on the screen and move it to adjust anywhere on the screen.
Step #5: Post the Reel
Once you have added all the things you wanted to your reel, tap the arrow at the bottom to share your reel/Instagram story with everyone.
You can even share it with your close friends only by tapping the “Close Friends” option on the screen.
Your video is successfully posted on your Instagram story, and everyone following you can now see it for the next 24 hours. The best part is that it will automatically disappear after the default time.
However, suppose you don’t want the video to disappear completely from your Instagram feed. In that case, you can choose the “Add to Highlights” option while posting it, and it will be automatically saved to your selected highlight.
Method #2: Posting Reel as Vidoe on Instagram Story by Recording It Within the App
This method will work best if you impulsively post a video on your Instagram story. Using the record feature on the Instagram story, you can record a video right away and post it your story without any hassle.
Here is what this method requires you to do:
Step #1: Go to “Your Story”
Like the above method, this one also requires you to go to the “Your Story” icon at the top left corner of the screen on your Home page. Tap the “Camera” option on the screen.
Step #2: Choose the desired element
On Instagram, you can record videos of different kinds. For instance, you can make a Boomerang, Multi-capture, Hands-free video, and much more.
To make the reel video of your choice, you first need to choose the element you want. Tap the “arrow” icon and select the video type you want to make from the available options.
Step #3: Start Recording the Video
Once you have chosen the video type you like, press the “White circle” at the bottom of the screen. This will initiate the recording process.
Step #4: Post the Reel to Your Story
When you are done recording the video, use different stickers, GIFs, and texts to make it more attractive. Select the “arrow” at the bottom to finally post the reel to your story.
