This innovative facility sets a global precedent by completing the EV battery recycling loop, achieving a recovery rate of over 96% of valuable materials.

The Kuppenheim facility is a testament to advanced engineering, utilizing a mechanical-hydrometallurgical process to separate and refine critical materials like lithium, nickel, and cobalt to battery-grade quality.

This next-generation recycling technique contrasts with traditional methods through its energy-efficient approach, operating at up to 80°C to minimize energy consumption and waste.

The 6,800 square-meter site also features a 350-kilowatt photovoltaic system, emphasizing Mercedes-Benz’s dedication to green energy, thereby ensuring net carbon-neutrality.

This cutting-edge plant processes an impressive 2,500 tonnes of batteries annually, creating enough recycled materials to construct over 50,000 new EV battery modules each year.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Environment Minister Thekla Walker underscored the significance of this facility during the inauguration ceremony.

The Kuppenheim plant is also the result of collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Primobius, a joint venture between the SMS Group and Neometals.

It has the backing of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, and receives insights from three German universities.
