Electric flying cars are no longer just a concept we see in science fiction movies.
Alef Aeronautics, a pioneering company in electric flying car technology, recently made a significant stride towards bringing these vehicles to market by securing a mass manufacturing deal for aviation-grade parts.
Since 2015, Alef Aeronautics has been working diligently to create a car that not only drives but also has vertical takeoff capabilities—all while remaining affordable.
After showcasing a scaled prototype, they caught the attention of venture capitalist Tim Draper, known for his early investment in Tesla.
With Draper leading a $3 million seed funding round, Alef accelerated its development. In October 2022, the world got its first look at Alef’s flying car, the “Model A. ”
This vehicle promises up to 200 miles of driving range and 110 miles of flight range, although it comes with a hefty price tag of $300,000.
Pre-orders for this groundbreaking vehicle began the same month, and by the end of 2022, Alef had received 440 reservations.
Less than a year later, Alef’s Model A became the first of its kind to receive a Special Airworthiness Certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, marking a significant milestone in the development of flying cars.
As of last summer, Alef announced that pre-orders had surpassed 2,500, which translates to an estimated $750 million in potential revenue once all orders are fulfilled.
The company allows reservation holders to join the “regular” queue for $150 or the “priority” queue for $1,500.
They also became the first to secure pre-orders through a car dealership, setting the stage for a future where flying cars might be sold alongside traditional vehicles.
This week, Alef signed a crucial mass manufacturing agreement with PUCARA Aero and MYC for the production of aviation-grade parts.
These companies, who supply parts to industry giants like Boeing and Airbus, were chosen for their impeccable safety records and strict compliance with aviation authorities worldwide.
The parts will meet certification standards set by the FAA, EASA, and other major regulatory bodies.
With pre-orders now exceeding 3,200, Alef is aligning itself with manufacturing partners to scale up production of the Model A.
Production is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, with deliveries expected to start shortly after.
In addition to the Model A, Alef is also working on a second vehicle, the “Model Z,” a four-door electric flying car projected for a 2035 launch, aiming for a much more affordable starting price of $35,000.
